Trip to Sheep World

shepworld4On Saturday 20th November 2004, Dynaspeak students and teachers traveled north from Auckland to wonderful "Sheep World" in Warkworth. Luckily for us the weather was beautiful and the bus trip very comfortable. We arrived at our destination at 10.30am where we were promptly ushered to the show room. The show room was built like a sheep shed, which included a platform for the farmer to demonstrate sorting and shearing sheep. The speaker (who was a genuine New Zealand farmer) informed us all about methods of farming in New Zealand and what a farmer's job entails. He then gave us an example of shearing a sheep and invited students to approach the platform to give it a go! After much excited squealing (from the students, not the sheep), the farmer then showed the group what has to be done to sort sheep. The farmer let the sheep run through and when he wanted to split the group he separated the sheep by changing gates. Again, the students had the opportunity to put what they learnt into practice, and after a few injured sheep, we were doing a good job. At the end of the show, small, cute little lambs were released and we had the opportunity to bottle-feed them. We then were able to wander around the farm and the farmer showed how his faithful dog 'rounds' up sheep on the farm.

After departing Sheep World, we traveled south to Wenderholm Regional Park; a beautiful natural beach on the East Coast. We enjoyed a picnic under the trees and beautiful weather. After splashing in the sea and playing in the sandy beach, we boarded the bus again and travelled back to Auckland City.

It was a great day and a very popular excursion, with more then 50 people attending. We learnt about sheep family, enjoyed fantastic scenery and took lots of photographs!.

Coming to New Zealand, first I worried a lot, but my spirits rose the moment I stepped through the door into Dynaspeak's warm welcome. I realised I really could learn English. Now I love my professional work in Early Childhood education, my chosen career, here in Auckland.Reflecting on my experience, I believe that kindness, a human atmosphere and sincere friendship with good people are the most precious things in this world.
